Gladys Knight Headlines A Stellar Lineup of International Artists for the 2019-2020 Season!
ATLANTA (June 10, 2019) – The Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University announces its 2019-2020 Rialto Series season, featuring an incomparable lineup of artists! The Rialto Center earned its reputation as the place Where Atlanta Meets the World with its signature Rialto Series performances by jazz greats, leading contemporary dance companies and groundbreaking musicians.
The Rialto Center has an exciting season planned. Known for presenting the very best in jazz, dance and international works, this season the Rialto has a few surprises. “The 2019-2020 Rialto Series season is eclectic, it’s captivating, it’s one of a kind and it’s the world has to offer,” said Jennifer Moore, Interim Executive Director of the Rialto. The season opens with the world-renowned, Bollywood funk party band, Red Baraat led by dhol player Sunny Jain. The 2019-2020 Rialto Series will feature world-class dance performances by Ailey II: The Next Generation of Dance led by Artistic Director Troy Powell, and Argentina’s all-male gaucho company, Ché Malambo, will set the stage afire with their virtuosic dancing.
The Rialto is doubling the comedy pleasure this season with two great comedy troupes. The political comedy of fan favorites Capitol Steps returns with fresh, new and always topical material. The legendary sketch and Improv comedy genius of The Second City brings a must-see show Greatest Hits (vol 59) to the Rialto stage. The Second City has spawned such greats as Steve Carell, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Keegan Michael Key of Key and Peele, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray and many more.
This season features heavy-hitters from the music world. For the first time ever on the Rialto stage Ms. Gladys Knight, the Empress of Soul, headlines a stellar lineup of GRAMMY-Winning greats this season! Jazz-lovers will be treated to performances by NEA Jazz Master and Tony-winning vocalist, Dee Dee Bridgewater; acclaimed trumpeter and composer, Terence Blanchard, and saxophonist Tom Scott in Concert with the Georgia State University Jazz Band. The biennial Johnny Mercer Tribute, presented by The Johnny Mercer Foundation and the Georgia State University Library, returns with jazz trumpeter and vocalist Joe Gransden and special guest. Peru’s most celebrated musical artist, Eva Ayllón, Queen of Afro-Peruvian Soul, will close out the Rialto season on a high note!
