From Carnival to Capoeira: The Rhythms of African Brazil
Described as “a spectacular display of color, movement, music, and drama” by the Chicago Sun-Times, acclaimed Brazilian export Balé Folclórico da Bahia has used movement as a bridge between its own Afro-Brazilian roots and myriad cultural immersions, thanks to more than 25 years of nonstop worldwide travel. When the dexterous, prolific 38-member troupe stops in Atlanta for the first time in nearly three years, it is a spectacle not to be missed!
November 1, Friday – Corina Brito has a B.A. in violin performance from St. Marcelina College in São Paulo, Brazil, and an M.A. in arts administration from the London City University in the UK. Corina has been teaching and performing for over twenty-five years. She is the founder and conductor of the Forsyth Youth Orchestra, and is the host of Classics & Beyond, a TV show from Best of Atlanta Concerts providing coverage of some of the top classical, contemporary and world musicians and performances that take place in Atlanta. She is also the founder and president of the Brazilian Music Society, which goal is to showcase and educate others on the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture.
November 2, Saturday - Master Muriel Souza Ribiero began his study of capoeira at the age of 17 in Brazil, and has been teaching children and adults locally since founding Cordão de Ouro (CDO) Atlanta in 2006. He travels nationally and internationally to participate in workshops and continuously learns and teaches about this diverse art. Cordão de Ouro (CDO) Atlanta is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide lifelong learning and empowerment for the development of a more equal, just and healthy community. Under the leadership of Master Muriel Ribiero, CDO Atlanta advances this mission through quality instruction in the art of capoeira.
